Robert Moody leads the orchestra in a program that combines two 20th century icons and contemporaries with contrasting visions of the “American Century.” The 10th Symphony was Shostakovich’s first orchestral work after his official denunciation by the Soviets in 1948, and is widely seen as a response to the death of Stalin. Meanwhile Gershwin’s Piano Concerto is infused with the spirit of the 1920s Jazz Age even as it addresses the traditional piano concerto form.
