Passion, Politics and Poison: Verdi's 'Luisa Miller'

THE INTRO

THE HIT SINGLE: When, on a Peaceful Evening"

The opera's best-known individual aria is "Quando le sere al placido," sung by Rodolfo (tenor Giuseppe Gipali) in Act Three.  Believing Luisa has betrayed him, he remembers their quiet evenings together -- now thinking it was all a deception.

THE B SIDE: "Punish Me O Lord"

Earlier in Act Three, after Wurm forces Luisa (soprano Lana Kos) to write the letter denouncing Rodolfo, she sings "Tu, puniscimi, o Signore," inviting the Lord's punishment while acknowledging that the effort to save her father's life will lead to her own dishonor.
