Passions and Potions: Donizetti's 'The Elixir of Love'

THE INTRODUCTION

THE HIT SINGLE: "Una furtiva lagrima"

In Act Two, Nemorino (tenor Vittorio Grigolo) sings one of the most popular of all tenor arias, "Una furtiva lagrima." He sees "one quiet tear" in Adina's eye, a sign that he may still have a chance with her, and says he'd sooner die than be with any other woman.

THE B SIDE: "Chiedi all'aura ..."

Despite Nemorino's obvious devotion to Adina (soprano Lucy Crowe), she tells him she could never return his feelings. When he wonders why, she says he might as well "ask the breeze," in the moving duet "Chiedi all'aura lusinghiera."
